Legionnaires Disease
The services offered by Environmental Services Ireland (ESI) are designed to assist our clients to discharge their duties under legislation such as the SAFETY, HEALTH AND WELFARE AT WORK ACT 2005 and associated guidance and industry best practice standards. The Irish HPSC (Health Protection Surveillance Centre) published the National Guidelines for the Control of Legionellosis in Ireland in 2009. Legionella control and risk management in accordance with these guidelines is one of a number of services offered by Environmental Services Ireland (ESI).
Water systems which are not properly installed and / or maintained can provide an ideal growth environment for a variety of pathogenic microorganisms including Legionella, Mycobacterium, Pseudomonas and Aspergillus amongst many others. It is essential therefore that water systems are assessed, any required remedial work completed and monitoring and sampling programs put in place to document the ongoing conditions within the system.
Legionnaires’ disease is a potentially fatal form of pneumonia. People may get infected when they breathe in tiny water droplets (aerosols) or droplet nuclei (particles left after the water has evaporated) contaminated with elevated concentrations of Legionella bacteria.
Environmental Services Ireland (ESI) can provide the following services to help the building manager discharge their duties and obligations relating to the control of Legionella bacteria in water systems: Legionella risk assessments, Remedial Work & Mechanical Maintenance, Monitoring & Sampling, Water Treatment.
